How do I Find a Business Angel or Investor?

Angel investors are not that easy to find but one thing is for sure, you will never find one sitting at home.

You need to follow Suttons Law.

Folklore has it that a serial American bank robber from the 1950’s called Willie Sutton was asked by a reporter why he kept robbing banks, Willie Sutton allegedly replied “…because that’s where the money is….”

In it’s simplest form you should go where people with money go.

That’s all very well but what if you haven’t got the money to mix?  You can of course fake-it-till-you-make-it and go there anyway. Sitting in the corner with a glass of water until the chance comes to start chatting with someone at the golf or polo match, yacht club or Grand Prix.  Easier said than done, but if you have the cocones you could have some luck!

Chances are good that you will know at least one investor so:

  1. Ask him or her if they know other investors.
  2. Talk to your friends and family as well as other people you know to see if they know someone.
  3. Local Business Support agencies have access to Angel syndicates and can make introductions.
  4. Go to as many networking events as you can each month. One a week should be a minimum.
  5. Make direct contact Private Angel syndicates in your area.
  6. Beware of independent business advisors who charge up-front fees to find you money.
  7. Internet. There are Crowdfunding platforms that allow you to post your proposal to be shared amongst their network of investors. This takes longer than you might think!
  8. You may have to try several networks and outlets before you find some or all of the money you need.
  9. Get an introduction to an Angel investor from a trusted advisor, an accountant or solicitor.
  10. Make sure that any investor or Angel organisation is registered with the FCA in the UK (Financial Conduct Authority) They have a duty to ensure that you’re treated fairly and there is a formal route through them to take a complaint if you are unhappy.

This and many more subjects will be expanded on in the Raising Angel Finance Course on the 28th of October 2017 Peterborough, UK. For more information contact; karlenepartridge@progressiveproperty.co.uk
